Street Fighter 5 - Week Five Update

by David Loft posted April 19th 2016

Well I made it to week 5. I'd like to say I'm still going strong but other interest and responsibilities have crept in. I spent a good chunk of the week finishing off my wife's portfolio website, just as she got a new job. I've also had a number of networking issues that have kept me from playing. And lastly, much of the week I have spent obsessively playing Clash Royale. Yes, the mobile game.

I was never a fan of Clash of Clans, it just wasn't the RTS I was looking for, and while Clash Royale isn't either, it turned out to be one I really enjoy. It has unfortunately been a game that's hard to put down.

But when I was able to put it down and get back into Street Fighter 5, I can happily say I'm still enjoying the game immensely. So far this week, much like last week, my training regimen continues to be absent and I have spent the week just playing casual online matches. I have not spent any of my time practicing my moves and combos...

Street Fighter 5 - Week Four Update

by David Loft posted April 11th 2016

So I'm one month into my journey and up to the three week mark I had been playing daily. That changed this week, although not for lack of interest. I have been updating my wife's portfolio website and its taken quite a bit of free time. And my free time is limited as I work full time and have two young children.

Another distraction was the new voice pack for Elite Dangerous called Orion, voiced by William Shatner. I had to play around with that, its pretty epic to have a space ship's computer voiced by Captain Kirk and being able to say a command like 'Computer, Engage' before jumping to another system.

So without as much playtime this week, my training fell by the wayside and I mostly just played for fun. I stopped playing ranked and mostly played online casual. I enjoyed this quite a bit more. I didn't feel as pressured to win, and loosing wasn't upsetting...

Street Fighter 5 - Week Three Update

So I've had Street Fighter 5 for three weeks now. And I've definitely had my ups and downs. I've been playing a lot of ranked matches this week and have won some, but unfortunately lost most.

It started to get extremely frustrating, especially after putting 20+ hours into the game and feeling like I've gone no where.

But I'm glad I'm recording my journey and that I can save my replays in game, because I can watch early online matches and than watch more recent ones and clearly see an improvement. Even if I'm still not good enough to get into bronze and out of rookie...

Street Fighter 5 - Week Two Update

I'm two weeks into my journey and improving everyday. I have spent the majority of my week trying to beat Survival on normal and I just can't do it. I can get to level 26 consistently, than I die at Ryu's hands just about every time. Occasionally I beat him only to die on level 27 against Zangief. I just don't understand why they don't increase the diffulty gradually. It's easy for far too long than the difficulty spikes up, it's starting to frustrate me.

Which is probably why I am playing online more the last couple days, although playing online is just difficult all the time. But the good news is I'm starting to win the occasional match, the bad news is I'm loosing the majority of matches. But I can see improvement, and its keeping me motivated to continue.

Street Fighter 5 - Week One Update

I'm one week in and I'm starting to make some progress. To his point I have been solely playing training, story mode and survival. I've selected my character, Chun-Li, and I've learned the move set and have begun forming strategies to win.

Today I went back online looking for my first win and I finally have it, a win over Zangief. It's a big improvement from my first online match from just 8 days ago, and yes I'm still not very good, and yes it was super cheap at times. But who cares I won!!!

Street Fighter 5 - the Journey Begins

I'm new to Street Fighter, really fighting games in general. I've definitely played them, I definitely remember playing them as a young kid in arcades. And I've certainly played them at friends houses. But I wasn't buying them, and I definitely didn't have any interest in improving my skills.

With the release of Street Fighter 5, I thought it was time to get good at a fighting game, to get good at Street Fighter.

I clearly have a long way to go and hundreds of hours of playtime before I will be able to call myself good. But I have to start somewhere. So here is my first online match...
