Comixology Now Offers DRM Free Downloads

But does it matter?

First and foremost good on Comixology and Amazon for this move. This will likely bring in a whole slew of readers who hate DRM and who would prefer to download and manage their comics themselves. And just five years ago I would have thought this was the best thing in the world. But at this point, I no longer want to have to store, organize and manually transfer comics to and from devices. But does it matter?

There are only two devices I want to read comics on, my phone and most importantly, my tablet. They both have access to the fantastic Comixology app and their excellent guided view technology. I just prefer the experience Comixology offers so much, that DRM is not an issue. At this point I get all my content digitally, through services like Steam, Google Play Apps + Games + Movies + Music + Magazines + Books, Netflix, Amazon and Comixology and they all have it stored in the cloud, ready whenever and wherever.

So while I definitely like everything to be DRM free, Iím not likely going to take advantage of it.

If they all offered DRM free downloads and I wanted to store everything on my computer or in the cloud of my choosing, I would need around 10TB of storage. Thatís at least $400 for the hard drives and Iíve had enough of them fail to know I would also want a backup, so double that. If i wanted them backed up in the cloud for me it would be $100 a month from Google. No thank you.

Yes I like the DRM free option. It allows me to take my content and go elsewhere. It covers me if I get a device I want to use that they donít offer an app for and it covers me if they go out of business or shut the service down. So while I definitely like everything to be DRM free, Iím not likely going to take advantage of it. I know this may seem foreign to many of you, but it definitely works for me.
